Saturday Joy Peacock married Kumi Walker in Heritage Chapel at 5pm. Joy and Kumi have such an interesting story! Long story short...Joy's family lives in Dallas (sidenote - Joy attended First Baptist Academy). Kumi grew up in Maryland. But Joy and Kumi met in New York, where they both worked on Wall Street together. Since then, Joy has returned to Texas to attend medical school; and Kumi owns his own business in California. Dr. Jeffress officiated their ceremony. The ceremony was very family-oriented. Kumi's parents walked him down the aisle; and Joy's parents walked her down. At the end of the ceremony they "jumped the broom."
-
The Jumping of the Broom is an African American wedding custom dating back to the antebellum period, when slave marriages were not recognized as legal or binding. During this era, slave communities adopted this ritual as a means of imparting legitimacy to their unions. The broom symbolizes the beginning of a new household, as well as the sweeping away of negative thoughts, actions, and spirits which can break the bonds of a happy marriage. Done as an act of remembrance and to honor the ancestors of the past, jumping the broom represents a leap of faith into marriage. [excerpt taken from Kumi & Joy's wedding program]
